The oldest source of precious coral production has been the Mediterranean Sea, which has
been used for centuries. Coral of the finest quality is obtained in bulk form the coasts of Algeria
and Tunisia. Other profitable sites for coral deposits are the coasts of Spain, France, Corsica,
Sardinia, and Sicily, as well as the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. Corals are also found off the
northwest coast of Africa, the coasts of Australia, and the Indian Ocean. Corals found off the
shore of Spain are deep in color. Corals are also found in the seas around Japan, and
Japanese corals are in demand because of the skillful craftsmen of Japan, who produce finely
wrought corals.
